Flow:

Always keep the final results in mind. Focus on the 'what' instead of the 'how'. It is vitally important to know the beginning and ending conditions otherwise you may find the design process challenging.

Designing components that aren't necessary to reach the goal can extend the time required to complete the project. However, using proven design concepts can keep the project scope flexible.

There may be times when it makes sense to divide the flow between multiple components that perform the same function in order to increase throughput. Pay special attention that output synchronization doesn't create additional problems.

Above all, keep the components that modify the flow on the same layer. Nothing makes life more difficult than trying to follow a flow through nested layers.
